British Values

Promoting British Values at Our School

 

At Boughton-under-Blean & Dunkirk Methodist Primary School we uphold and teach pupils about British Values which are defined as:


Democracy
Rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

 

The Department for Education state that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values were reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014. At Boughton-under-Blean and Dunkirk Methodist Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways

Democracy

School council elections including hustings and formal balloting and councillors are elected by their peers

School council representatives involved in school events in the community such as Remembrance services both locally and at Bradbury Grange (a local Methodist residential home for the elderly)

School Council representatives involved in the appointment of staff including writing information for the micro-site for appointment of HT

Rule of Law

Clear school rules linked to Christian values

Clear behaviour policy that is followed consistently by staff

Geography curriculum enhances pupils’ knowledge of the United Kingdom including location of counties and key cities

Visits from Dogs Trust, PCSO, Police dog handler, Road Safety Workshops, Fire Brigade, dentists, PDSA, Blue Cross

Clear anti-bullying policy and procedures for recording incidences including cyber bullying

School council representatives lead class and school decision making resulting in changes to playground, clubs, Collective Worship and decisions about which charities to support

House Captains are elected by their peers in Y6

Use of general/ local elections/ referendums to teach further about the democratic process

Beginnings of democracy taught through history curriculum e.g. ancient Greece

Pupils contribute to collective worship and assemblies

Individual Liberty

Visits from Dogs Trust, PCSO, Police dog handler, Road Safety Workshops, Fire Brigade, dentists, PDSA, Blue Cross

Teaching of life skills for our KS2 pupils e.g. cycling proficiency, first aid, travel on buses

Use of debate in lessons to allow children the opportunity to defend an opinion

Annual Internet Safety Day

Computing curriculum ensures that pupils know how to keep themselves safe online

Charities that have been supported in the past two years have involved both local and global charities- Seeds for Africa, Canterbury Food Bank, Comic Relief, Children In Need, Save the Children, Demelza House, Macmillan, Pilgrims Hospice, Water Aid

Class led organisation of events to raise money for charities e.g. Save the Bee Fair and MacMillan coffee afternoon

Individual children taking on own charitable fundraising events in school- fostered children, Macmillan

Establishment of #thisgirlcan club to challenge gender stereotypes in sport

Sports leaders organise sporting events for each class and run during playtime

Salus Anti-bullying questionnaire completed by pupils annually

Digital champions have been trained in online safety and action plan created

Annual antibullying week/fortnight to educate pupils about the effects of bullying on pupils

Mutual Respect

Visit to Gudwara by Y6 as part of their work on Sikh faith

Visit to mosque by Y4 as part of their work on Islam

Geography topics leading to learning about customs and traditions e.g. teaching about India and China

RE curriculum teaches children about a wide range of other world faiths

The celebration of festivals from other faiths e.g. Diwali, Hannukah

Opportunities to learn about different cultures through the World Cup and the Olympics

Sponsorship of a child in Guatamala including regular letter writing by Y5 pupils (same age as the child)

Visit from the Swale Schools Project to inform Y5 and Y6 pupils about bullying people with disabilities.

Anti-bullying Ambassadors appointed (6 pupils from Y4-6). They have received training and support pupils during playtimes and lunchtimes

Playground Patrol (30 children from Y3-6) established to support the work of Anti-bullying Ambassadors

Annual anti-bullying week

Anti-bullying information sent home with pupils and separate leaflet for parents

Strong partnerships with other local Methodist schools including sporting events, curriculum enrichment days and competitions
